In this instance it's in the font, Coalition. I usually go one of two ways:
overlay mask in illustrator with the blending on screen or multiply.
Or I pull the Vector into PS as a smart object. Use the select wand to grab the part that's getting the texture, create a new layer over top and use brushes to get the texture I want. Then blend it in using opacity and the blend settings.

Nice textures! Is the point at the bottom of the shield supposed to have those two spurs coming off it?

Nope... Good catch! I accidentally uploaded the non-final logo. It's not supposed to have the barbs.
