Well if it weren't weathered and dingy it would look just like the default icon, so that may be why he took this approach. Then again, I am fairly certain you would have had something to say about it in that case as well.
I'm just confused why it looks like that. It doesn't look like leather, it looks like rock. The paper looks dented and deformed, though the edges don't suggest that at all. The red lines get too washed out near the top, and while I can understand the pencil writing having texture, I don't understand why the printed lines do. They should be nearly solid.
