Nice design, but it's quite busy. Does it have to be that complicated? Also, I feel the visual hierarchy needs to be improved. The first thing I noticed was the bright blue border to the right. Still, pretty cool.

Sorry but I gotta agree with Thomas - it sure it pretty busy, making it a bit difficult to focus anywhere. Some nice little touches though :-)

    Thanks guys!

Unfortunately I can't do anything with the UX, I was asked just to *restyle* current layout, which is, indeedly, very busy (the initial inspiration for the app (from circa 2000) is Microsoft Outlook). Hopefully next iteration of redesign will include some heavy UX reworks, which I'd like to be part of.

The right border is a part of section highlight. Mail is blue, contact is yellow etc. So it needs to be obvious in what part the user currently is. Actually there will be a search field in right blue bar.

So busy, without bigger UX changes it will be the same mail client as is now. And dark grey make it so heavy :(

@Martin: both points are completely legit. But I can't do bigger UX changes -- I even can't move things more than a few pixels. Let's see in another iteration.

Btw do you know the original?

I think Martin hinted at a way of making it less busy, without having to rearrange elements... perhaps lighter colours, and less contrast for less important elements would help?

The changing of grays and better separation between items could help reduce the cluttered feel. For example, maybe dividers inbetween the section likes (Mail, Contacts, etc) and lightening the grays.
