Mini Case Study: Couch-to-5K Exercise Tracker App

Hello everyone!

#UIX101 task #041, completed! 😀

In this task, I was asked to design the necessary daily tracking interfaces for a beginner-level program aimed at training users from scratch for a 5 km run.

Goal: Design a user interface for a beginner-level running program that motivates and tracks users to be able to run 5 kilometers from scratch.

Research:

  • Couch-to-5K programs are popular running training methods for beginners.

  • These programs typically last for 8-12 weeks and involve running 3 days a week.

  • Running times and walking breaks gradually increase.

  • The programs are usually motivating and easy to follow.

  • Cross-training activities are also included apart from running.

Design:

  • The running program interface should be simple, easy to use, and motivating. Because maintaining consistency in sports for beginners is challenging and important. Moreover, trying to figure out where everything is in the app while covered in sweat can be annoying. At this point, I thought of gamifying the process for motivational purposes. I took inspiration from retro Atari games as the theme for this game. Because I thought it would remind us of how we didn't give up on overcoming challenging levels while playing games in our childhood 😊. According to this game concept, the user has an avatar trying to climb to the top of the mountain to win the big trophy. Of course, to do this, the user needs to do some sports exercises. The exercise milestones on the main map represent weekly goals. The user sees as many stars shining as the percentage of workouts done by the application, and the user can see with how many stars they passed to the next level.

  • The interface should be designed to help users track their progress and reach their goals. To achieve this goal, I designed an analysis page. So, a general table showing how much of the exercises have been done can be seen. In addition to this, how long the exercise lasted, how much effort was exerted (in other words, how much the user struggled), and if there are any notes, they can be seen.

  • On the exercise page, for cases like not knowing how to do a certain movement, users can access an instructional video. By the way, a countdown can be started with a single icon button according to the exercise duration. Most mobile devices already have a timer, but I thought it would be more practical to do it without leaving the app and without dealing with setting the time.

I eagerly await your feedback, thank you for taking the time to read 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻
