Mathalon awards

As students complete assigned math questions, they earn stars towards winning the Mathalon achievement! The achievement can be awarded by the teacher with an award certificate, or signing a class pennant. This is a great motivator that rewards perseverance and encourages a growth mindset.

The original certificate served well, but Knowledgehook's student UI had a refreshed and more gamified look and we wanted to align the certificates as well.

Steering away from the generic design of classroom award certificates, I took inspiration from E-sports (video game competitions that have gained mass popularity). The new design was well-received and appealed to the kids so much more!

We were also more considerate of the printer-friendliness of the designs by offering an ink-friendly alternative. See below:

Faded printout

This was not a request from teachers. I noticed that many teachers who shared the certificate on Twitter were printing in black and white (see example above). As a designer, we learn to identify areas of improvement. Sometimes these improvements are not vocalized, even if conducting user interviews!

Teachers love rewarding their students with this motivational certificate.
