Design process - Sketching

Sketching - why bother?

What is sketching exactly?

Sketching is a two step process.

Step 1: Idea generating & sketching.

Step 2: Adding details & refining.

Start with generating ideas and create simple low LOD (level of detail) sketches.

Use boxes, arrows, squiggly lines etc.

Don't use colors at this point and don't focus on the details at the moment.

The initial process of sketching is not about quality, but rather about quantity.

You need to get as many ideas from your bloodstream as you can, and preferably discard the bad ones as soon as possible, ensuring focus on the most promising concepts.

At this stage, it's a good idea to timeframe yourself and focus on the bigger picture.

This concludes step 1, which smoothly transforms into step 2 - adding details and refining. Adding those details and refining your sketches of selected best ideas segue us into the next crucial design process - wireframing.

This is where I usually ditch pencil and paper, and move into the digital realm.

But do whatever fits you, design process is supposed to help you create, not create boundaries and constraints.

Sketching is often a great time saver as it allows us to identify and discard ineffective solutions early in the process. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you incorporate it into your workflow.
