@Max: I personally think you should really get into the habit of using grids. However, It depends on what kind of design you're creating.
For me, using grids is essential in most of my designs. Although it takes some time to set it up, but trust me, it makes your life way easier. :)

A grid for a Tri-fold brochure tutorial I'm working on.

Here's a quick breakdown to what's going on:
Light Blue = Slug guides
Red = Bleed guides
Green = Fold marks
Black = Artboard boarders
Magenta = Margin guides
Blue = Baseline grid
Grey = Cap-height grid
Cyan = Column (panel) guides
Grids are awesome, eh?
