Mini Kiosk Interface

McDoni is Indonesian Javanese Restaurant. All of the menu is home-made traditional Javanese cuisine, with a typical Javanese restaurant atmosphere. The owner is planning to make walk-in customer service, especially for lunch and dinner, when the orders peak. The customers can order from the kiosk machine and proceed the payment on cashier to split the queue.

Design Process

To make the design more effective and user-friendly, there are several steps that we used, from creating user persona, investigating the problem, generating thoughts for solutions, and also creating prototype, to give the user an example for them to test.

User Persona

First, we create the User Persona for the app. We define the typical users who mostly will use it. Considering their demography, behavior etc.

Problems

Next, we define the problem based on the client brief, user persona, compare with similar apps, and market research. And then we get several pain points and insights either from the client or users.

From Client:

  1. Lunch and dinner are peak hours. Customers queue for up to 15 minutes.

  2. Using kiosk machine needs a lot of budgets.

  3. Client is planning to hire photographer for better picture.

  4. Investing in kiosk machine system could position them to become a modern middle to upper restaurant.

From User:

  1. Customers usually want to be served at a table while reading a menu book.

  2. Most customers older than 40 tend to use same digital apps that they already comfort with. Not necessary to explore more.

  3. Not used to using kiosk machines, either in ordering or payment process.

From Kiosk Machine:

  1. Relatively expensive device. Especially with bigger screen.

  2. Not a common service practice in Indonesia. Only in big city and several brands.

  3. Need an employee to oversee and help new customers.

  4. Most kiosk interface doesn't show order list, just amount and total price.

Solutions

The application's goal is to demonstrate how McDoni can improve their service as much as possible, maintain their restaurant brand, and solve their problem with not only beautiful but also convenient and clear user interface. Considering the problems and situation, we define some solutions for McDoni trough the walk-in service apps.

  1. We imitate the apps flow like how the waiter takes the order. "Makan disini atau bawa pulang?" βž” "Mau pesan apa?" βž” "Pedas atau engga?" βž” "Nanti bayarnya di kasir ya".

  2. We use menu book hierarchy when arrange menu categories, to make customers feel familiar and make it easier to find the menu they want.

  3. There is order section where user can view all of their order list.

  4. Indonesia has so many awesome photogenic foods. It would be a waste to only display it as a thumbnail, especially when you hire professional photographer. From that, we put a bigger image, so customer can look at the image of the dish like when they see it on menu book.

  5. Process is divided, ordering on kiosk machine, and payment on cashier. The purpose is to split the queue. Ordering and payment occur simultaneously, not in stages.

(Note: Payment process can take place before or after the customer finish their dishes. The decision is decided by McDoni as the stakeholder.)

  1. Considering this is the first time McDoni apply kiosk system, we already research the availability of kiosk provider in Indonesia. We recommend Onesia 13 inch Table Kiosk system with considerations:

  • Smaller device is cheaper rather than big standing kiosk for starters.

  • Table kiosk available in landscape orientation, fit with the design to be created where the order lists are shown on the side.

  • Table kiosk doesn't need much space and can be moved freely if needed. Suitable for new adapter like McDoni for trial error process.

  • The UI design can be applied in various tablet in market, with cheaper price, in case McDoni decide to not use kiosk machine.

Typography

Raleway typeface is minimalist, but still has its characteristic and make the design looks fresh and clean. Suitable for the design where lots of images (for menu) and texts are used. Not too simple like KFC, too formal like fine dining, too lively like street food, and modern enough for middle to upper restaurant.

Color

Indonesia is rich in food and spices. Green and browny-gold are used to represent Indonesia's natural and cultural wealth. Where these colors also familiar for Indonesian theme restaurant.

(The colors used need further with stakeholder as a brand owner. The colors used here are self-recommendation from designer)
