after some suggestions, we realized that this is sufficiently application-centric, and that as long as the interface below changes completely, it'll be plenty clear.
also, i cleaned it up a bunch to look prettier. warmer color, a little more 3d, very subtly textured, with sharper highlights and softer shadows.

This is lookin fantastic. Much better then the previous shot. One thing I was thinking is that the shadow beneath the switch it's self looses the edge so it kind of is just blurry. Seems like it should have a tiny bit of contrast there as to accentuate the edge, for a little bit of "realism"

@Micah: I like this much better. It might be a mistake but I believe it would make more sense UI-wise to have the "browse" text and the "organize" text switch colours in this shot, making it clear that the "browse" is selected (as shown by the dark chocolate colour in the previous shot).

I really love the look and style of this, but I'm finding it hard to tell what's on and what's off — though it maybe more obvious in use.

I think it looks great so far except that the text is, in my opinion, too low contrast in comparison to the background for the words next to the switch and also the title itself. Kinda hard to read sitting a comfortable difference away from my screen. (Though I'm guilty of getting way up close to things to inspect them.)
