Game Assets Design - Little Pilot

We are helping a crowdsourcing company to create game assets design for their client that want to have a mobile browser game added as part of their entertainment feature for their customer.

The brief was to provide a simple 2D game assets design that can be played in browser on mobile phone with the following game play criteria:

  • Side scrolling game with obstacles

  • Simple tap on screen to bring plane up, no tap plane comes down

  • Multiple levels and characters

  • Endless/Runner game that ends when the game player hit an obstacle

The client of this project is one of the biggest airport in North America, and they want to have the game still related to their service, so we decide to go with a game that have an airplane theme, along with showing the beautiful nature, airport surrounding, and city landscape as part of the in-game experience.

After gathering all the requirements, we start the creative process and within 5 days, we are able to presenting and gets client approval for the following game assets design creation:

Avatar Selections

In our meeting with the client, one of the key goal that they want to accomplish was to make their customer (game player) feels engage and connected with this game, therefore we decide to propose avatars feature as part of the in-game experience that their customer can select while playing this game.

Avatars can be the key to offering more intense and satisfying game experiences. They can increase the feeling of being transported to another world, provide an enhanced sense of agency, and satisfy the need to feel connected to others. In the process they make games more fun and engaging, and players more loyal.

To accommodate game players from different background and ages, we comes up with 5 different avatar characters that they can choose from:

Aircraft Selections

The main characters for this game is an aircraft that will bounce in the mid air when the game player click the button or tapping the mobile phone screen. We are doing brainstorming with several mobile game players and doing survey to airport passengers and comes up with 3 popular types of aircraft that we create as the main character protagonist for this game that the game player can choose from:

Obstacles

We create more than 24 obstacles for the games but we will only show some of them in this case study to make it a 'pleasant surprise' (play the games when you visit the airport).

All the obstacles needs to have a characteristic as a flying object since the protagonist will be an aircraft. It also need to add some level of different difficulties just by seeing their presence, this is due to the simplicity of the game nature and to add more values for the game.

Game Accessories

To make the game label visual and instructions clear and engaging to the player, we create a minimalist and simple design accessories that can be found below:

Level Background Selections

We create total 24 different level background selections that the design elements can be separated and repeated for the endless game type using nature view and city landscape related to the client country to make the game experience feels more engaging and familiar, Here is some of the background design for the case study:

Game Over Design Screen

After a fun time playing this game, the game player will need a final screen where they can see their aircraft landing to the airport, and this is where this screen will be appear to the player.

This screen will be dynamic, where it will show artwork depending of which aircraft being selected by the game player. In this screen, we're showing how the game art created for the jet fighter aircraft.

At the end of our presentation with them, the client of this project gave their approval for the game assets design and we are able to hand over all the assets to other team that manage the development phase.
