A "hero image" is the large, page anchoring visual. Pretty sure it's a leftover term from classic advertising, where the "hero" was the shot everyone (director, photographer, client, etc.) agreed on.

@Caleb, Safari, Mobile Safari, Firefox, and Chrome all handle it pixel-prefect.
I haven't checked Opera or IE, but that's enough spread to make it worthwhile in my book (for a wedding website for friends).
