I'm not totally happy with this, but I don't know what it is. I can't put my finger on it. I also changed the copy on the drop down, and the toggle (fronts/backs) because the real copy is too telling to what this is!
It's kind of hard to give a lot of feedback, as this screenshot is just a small sliver and not seeing it in relation to the rest of the screen. The first thing that I see is the search icon seems to not fit the sleek style you have established. A more refined search glass icon like from the pictos series seems like it would be a better fit. Also is there a reason for no injection of color? Would that help things out?
Styling is fine. I think the UX is a bit odd. Buttons seem arbitrarily placed. Not sure what to expect when I click each function... what it does/where it takes me/etc.. There is no direction.
Try reorganizing these things and maybe you'll see a better plan of attack.
Hi Bryan. First, good to meet you yesterday! Second, this is looking good. Third, here's a few thoughts:
- Trying bringing the search button into the same style of the other buttons, and not sticking above the line.
- Assuming "fronts / backs" is toggling the view above, try tying those buttons together visually with the area above or add some shared title for them like "view"
- If the dropdown also changes your view, move the search to the far left so the things that change your view are together (and again maybe tie them together visually).
@Jason - Great feedback. I agree, I think the icon is what is killing it for me as well. I'm working on doing a better one now. As for color, the UI is primarily gray scale so the main focal points pop (it's an image/photo based app)
@Rina - You're right - these buttons feel a bit funny without context. I should state that SEARCH is the main function here which is why it sticks out so much. The app is centered around searching, so being able to quickly get to the search was the main goal. The adjacent buttons though make zero sense, perfectly correct.
@Chris - Switching up the type today. A lot of feedback I got was on the type. As for the search, as I was saying to Rina, it's the main function of the app and needs a quick "go-to". But the magnifying glass is not the right icon for this.
@Eric - Awesome meeting you too man!! Let's grab a drink some time. Thanks for all the comments. Some of the feedback is addressed in my earlier comments - but I see a consistent theme here in that the search button seems to be what is breaking the design (as well as the buttons).
Fixing everything together today. Will try to post a rebound later.

Thanks Julien! But you don't have to actually do it - too much work! You can just give me some feedback :)

Search button wierds me out! Agree, clarity is a bit compromised. You try letter spacing that type a bit also?
