3 A.M. Thoughts Journal - 2021

A Journal that I created and designed to sell on Amazon.

How it Began

My interest in creating an amazon journal began when exploring passive-income ideas. I am VERY passionate about stationary. So many notebooks and planners have been bought, only to be left untouched to preserve their perfection. Combined with this passion, my technical skill, and design-eye, I decided to give it a shot.

The Research

I began my process by doing some basic market research. I got into the mind of the consumer and searched on Amazon for products that might have a market gap I could fill. By searching, I found that there was a niche of indie, off-beat, and witchy/spiritual style-journals. There were a few targeted towards night owls in this style. I saw a need for a higher-content journal with higher-quality design within this niche. I used this research to inspire both the concept and the copy that would appear in the journal.

The Process

After doing my initial market research I jumped into some informal design research. I searched Amazon, Esty, Pinterest, and Google, for design inspiration. I needed the design to appeal to Gen-Z consumers who were night-owls and had an interest in mental-health, and spirituality. I wanted something that would pop off the amazon site page. I decided to go for a rainbow gradient with a light grain (for that comforting, nostalgic/retro feeling), and a celestial font for the headline. The cover feels lucid, and floaty - like a dream.

In Hindsight

I absolutely loved doing this project, and I learned so much doing it. If I were to do it again, there are a few things I would do differently. I would have...

  • Revised the copy a couple times over to create more compelling and useful copy

  • Done more thorough research on what market gap would have the most potential - due to the heavily oversaturated market for low-content books on amazon

  • Included more interactive activities within the book

Summary

This project taught me so much about the role design plays in marketing. I also got fantastic product design experience. I totaled 16 sales for this journal. It was mostly friends and family who bought the journal, but I plan on creating more high-quality and higher content suing what I learned from this first product-launch.
