If you are wishing for valuable features why not just wish for a workflow that detracts from relying on the layer panel so much? A simple way to create, edit, and select objects on the canvas would remove your need to draw focus away from what you are working on.
Fireworks has done this from the onset. Silly Ps users :)
I die a little more inside each time I see some new Photoshop thing implemented with Flash Panels or some AIR crap. It's lots of simple improvements like this that need to be made!

If I could build this, I would. But I can't. So I designed it and am putting it out there.
Simple idea. Field to search all layers in your active psd, with autosuggest, and jump to layer on click. Layer type is identified with an icon.

Very interesting. I like it. However, same ol' UI? Maybe you should try like 2.0 :) Keep up the good work!
