I really think that focusing entire icon on the Writer cursor is not a good visual communication. An App's icon is parallel to a game-box design of computer games. It is what users first see when they browse Appstore, it is used in all sorts of other lists, websites, blogs, etc. Therefore it needs to communicate MORE than just one small aspect of an App it represents.
Not to trash it completely, the iA Writer icon would benefit if you put at least one character in front of the cursor, so it is something like this (ASCII art commence!) [ a| ]. The point of Writer is not the cursor. It is the text it produces. Communicate text and/or writing.
I disagree - focussing on one small aspect is vital for an icon. You can't illustrate every aspect - the more detail you add, the more it loses focus. It takes longer to memorise. Yes, they could've just added another character, but it would've unbalanced it.
As it is, it could mean cursor bar, letter i or monolith from 2001, but they all work. I think the name+icon communicates what it does well
I rather like the focus on the cursor bar, but I have to say that I much, much prefer the current icon. The 3D treatment just doesn't jive with the simplicity and elegance of the application. I say keep the icon flat and simple make the blue bar the centerpiece - in other words, the current icon :)
I’m with Jason. The current icon looks simpler and kind of zen-esk. The glossiness and imbalanced shape of the new icon could be more distracting in the dock.
I would prefer the current icon in a smaller size (maybe similar to the Creative Suite icons) and an even more flat look (e. g. no gradient in the cursor).
iA Writer is plain and simple. And that is what its icon should be too.
This is just a tiny edit - the "key" that the cursor is resting on looks like it's made of aluminum or glass in the original, which is totally unlike the keyboard of any Mac currently shipping.
I just created a rounded white "key" (and yes, I looked at a black key - it's far too graphically heavy) and cleaned up some of the pixel edges on the cursor. Thoughts?

I'm afraid I agree with Goran.
If I saw this without knowing what the app was, then I wouldn't have a clue what it does.
Adding a single character will be much clearer.
p.s - the app is awesome :)
