I like this a lot, Jim. I prefer it to the textured 'polished' version; I think it communicates your graphic design skills more immediately and has more personality.
It feels more honest - the textured app-style icon thing is to feel a bit overdone across the board to me.
I agree, about textured, app style icons being overdone - (dribbble is plastered with the things!)
I want to settle on the typographical element of the logo first. Then work out how to present the logo.
I'd not even thought of using the sketched look as the final route. But as you point out it does contain a few attributes that hint at a creative side.
Love the logo and the simplicity of it, and man you gotta post a GIF animation of your new website's header image or of the navigation... plain awesome. Keep up the good work :)
