    I really like the icons, but in terms of usability I don't think people having to hover over a link to see where it goes is a good idea.

    I feel you, but I dont really care. This is a portfolio site aimed at getting clients who appreciate smart design.

    Also, the site plays off of a train station map theme and there is a "legend/key" for the nav.

    @Danny I'd say that smart design is when something is easy to use, and it's obvious how it works. Here's the wiki about "Mystery meat" navigation. I personally wouldn't use it in a design but maybe it'll work on your site, so good luck :)
