I agree, but I would argue that graphic design != UI design.
I guess the problem is that shots of sliders and buttons and input fields and menus and various other UI elements, while nice, lack context, and UI design is, well, precisely all about context.
Maybe because the majority of people in here are UI and web designers (I might be wrong). But I'm hoping that's slowly going to change. That's why we need to recruit more designers from other disciplines (print designers, illustrators, logo designers, t-shirt designers, etc.)
@Inka There are plenty of other kinds of designers on here, but your right the majority and the ones that get voted most "popular" are ui and web most of the time, which is a shame
@Luke, I agree. I'm also wondering the criteria of what shots get onto the popular page. Is it really the number of likes a piece gets on the same day it was posted?
@ Inka - well its how many views and likes you get per shot - which is usually liked to the amount of followers you have. So it's not necessarily about the "quality" of shot..but about the stats. Thats a generalization of course..
@Luke - thanks for clarifying it for me. I think the best way is to just keep putting up your best work forward and don't worry about the Popular stream :-)
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I usually "like" shots that I can learn from or be inspired by. That’s why many of them are interfaces, because I’m looking to improve my work and most of my work centres around UI design.
For the record I think the popular page should be more like Forrst’s, in that shots with many comments (even if they don’t have any likes) will get on there.
I hear you, and im more on a non-webdesigner designer, but I think thats whats great about dribbbbble. Where else can you see a nice gallery of subtle UI designs. Nobody ever gives props to a little button, but here they can.
yea good point Kelly, think people just get a little touchy about the balance of appreciation..but that's what competition is all about no?, pushing yourself to be better. Interesting points everyone. Thanks Thomas for bringing this up..some good perspectives on dribble here :)
I agree with Adam. And also agree with Thomas. I can understand showing off some UI design, but in a way that shows how it will be implemented. Not just a slider on a textured background. Show it in use.
It's not that they don't look good, a lot of them are excellently designed, but I'd love to see them in use and how they would look with other elements.
Agreed Clay I would criticise the amount of specific UI element PSDs that are created in isolation as opposed to in the context of a design. I love seeing the detail that goes into these elements but only when they work in the context of a great design and have "proper" functional purpose i.e. they are used cleverly and relate directly to the content and other UI elements on the site.
So anything that is simply a fancy slider does sometimes get my goat a little. I mean that's great but it seems like it was created specifically for Dribbble as opposed to showing an insight into a design you are working on or having real purpose.
Well … I would dare to say that most of the dribbble shots that score very high are designed to do just this: score high on dribbble. I gave it a try. Instead of showing cropped sections of the whole work, I adjusted the shot’s content to the shot’s size. Scored much higher. No wonder: that’s maybe just a nicer form of presentation and more likely to attract someone to actually click.
Another thing. When I posted a single slider, I got a lot of feedback and likes, much more than any of my shots before. The feedback was helpful, the slider is in use in a project I am working at the moment. But I am sure I can post some stuff just for the sake of getting ranked high on dribbble.
Because: People come to dribbble to see sliders : ) The question is: so what?
Very nice piece by the way Thomas. You just posted it to get a lot of feedback on dribbble I guess so your criticism is a little twisted. But I like that : ) Also … this may be the most creative piece (my opinion) I have seen from you so far. Really clever!
The thing is that there is a lot of nice UI stuff on here (sliders, buttons etc) but most of them or many are just copies with the exact same layout and effects. It's like some people rip off apple gfx (think iCloud icon and the brushed metal) completely and post it as their own, which is a shame IMO...
I kinda agree, but the point of dribble isnt always to showcase creative designs but sometimes just to show something simple you are working on, and if a slider showcases good technique and maybe something slightly different about it, i dont see an issue with it becoming popular.

Think of something else than sliders. It’s ridiculous that boring sliders and layer effects get the most likes.

+1 to Kelly.
I wouldn't check dribbble half as often if it didn't happen to be focused on UI & web design.
