WATERCOLORS

This body of work, a series of watercolors titled A Relational Self Portrait, stems from the death of my grandmother. Playing with the definitions of “relation,” both as in family and relational identity, I crafted a portrait of myself through images of family. Relational identity is a theory that individuals are influenced and formed by their surroundings and the people they interact with. In the beginning, I created paintings of my grandmother to feel closer to her but eventually discovered an intense interest in our shared family history and how it has shaped us. Using old photo albums, I constructed a series that represents myself through relatives.
