I am fascinated with typography, but without formal training in the field (I have an Illustration degree from RIT), I wanted to create a playground to jump right in, start sketching, and post the results — no matter how amateurish they may be.
This is the first day of the blog design, with type sketches starting now to get a head start on content.
UPDATE: Decided to build this with Wordpress, though I know Tumblr would have been the easiest option. The web enthusiast in me is getting caught up wanting to learn more and more about Wordpress. The type enthusiast in me is sketching on a daily basis and getting frustrated as hell. Just part of the process, right. ; )
I have also been interested in working on my own hand drawn type but for some reason feel nervous about putting pen to paper. Thanks for sharing this and I look forward to seeing your work unfold.
Good luck! I can't wait to see your progress. And I'd say, don't worry. Awful is OK :) Everybody starts somewhere, right? God only knows our old portfolios :P
Thanks Ryan, I'm gonna start out extremely basic and add on to it from there, so I'm hoping to get something up by next week. Lots of sketches in the meantime.
Looking forward to hearing about your experience at Sagmeister, man! Very cool.
http://typesketches.com/ is now live! Still making some technical tweaks and modifications...let's face it, I'm no Dan Cederholm when it comes to CSS...but I'll be able to start adding new work to the site on a consistent basis now.
Wow. Thanks! Great to hear from a fellow self-taught typographer. Say - I am traveling thru Berlin from Dec 10 - 13th...let me know if by chance you have room in your schedule for a coffee & chat -- I'd like to hear more about your process and also anything about the art scene in your city.
Cheers!

I'd like to send out a big thanks to http://dribbble.com/jessicahische, http://dribbble.com/super_furry, and http://dribbble.com/joncontino for the amazing inspiration they provide to the community with their work — I wouldn't be starting this project without that.

Thanks man, the site will be up in a day or 2!
(With some pretty terrible first stabs at drawing type, I might add.)
