Early stages of a new illustration project that I'm pretty excited about.

Sweet — the planet textures/lines work well — particularly the topography-like largest one.

Great Seth! What's the project all about?

Thanks, you guys. I don't think of color as something I'm particularly strong at, so that's nice to hear. Still messing around at this point.

@John, it's for a new company doing wall art. This is going to eventually be a huge set of decals (some of which will glow in the dark) for a space-themed child's bedroom or playroom.

Great shot! Those shadows on the main planet really pop it off the page...

Awesome halftones. :) Especially the top one.

Thanks, UI, Michael and Adam! I think I'm going to stick with one of these shadow styles across the board; seems like the style on the large planet is the most popular.

It's been brought to my attention that there are some who think this shot resembles this shot by Mr. Brent Couchman too closely.

I'll let people draw their own conclusions, but let me say that I was aware of Brent's shot (and its popularity), and I intentionally tried to steer clear of it. I went into this project knowing that I wanted to use simple shapes and halftone shadows. As I said above, this is still early in the process, I'm just experimenting with different ways of doing that.

My integrity as a designer is something I hold dearly, and don't take lightly when it's called into question. I think I've injected my own style into this and have been unjustly judged, but I'd like to hear what others think. And if Brent Couchman, who I have great respect for, wants to weigh in, that would be great, too.

I love the depth of this. While everyone has their own preferences, I like yours better because of the depth it has. :)

Seth, I think you're totally right in this situation. Dribbble is full of similar shots. Just take UI elements, for example. How many dribbble shots are there of buttons, sliders, and dropdowns that look very much a like? Retro illustrations -- in general -- tend to look stylistically very similar. Now take that style into a space theme and you just happen to have similar shots. Similar but still very different in the individual complexities of the executions. Nothing wrong with that at all, my good man. Integrity = intact.

Seth and I had a great conversation via email about this shot and Dribbble in general, and all is well. He's a great dude and I'm sure this final piece is gonna be rad.
