@Erica Can I see an example of a silhouette with a neck? From my experience necks aren't visible in silhouettes. The head usually hides it. Take a look at my avatar for example.

I agree with the neck comments, but I also think the shoulders of this rendering are much too round.
Here's a few I've done in the past with necks clearly visible but also with a little more definition to the shoulders or shirt that the avatar has. That might help it seem more defined.

Neck or no neck, douchey hair or not, I think it's decent as is. My only problem with the concept though is that the avatar is very vague. Like it should be a default avatar for a user in some application, not as the app icon itself.
Being that you've oh-so sneakily hidden the project details from us, the app icon give me no actual clue as to what the app is. Which may, or may not be what you're after. Just making observation.
(...certainly sounds like the client has pretty tight parameters, so maybe this is just what you're constrained to?)

the facebook silhouette has no ears! prefer this one..the shape of the person is more universal, with no collar-shape, corporate feel.
