Been wrestling with how to manage navigation on mobile sites as well. Currently thinking about replacing header nav with a "Show/Hide Navigation" button on narrow screens, but I quite like this idea too.
@Joni I saw this execution on couple of sites, one of them is mobilism.nl. The good things, I think, in this kind of execution are that the navigation won't fill up the whole screen of a small handheld device and that the content comes "first". Of course your show/hide method would also solve these problems.

New Kisko site will be responsive! This all should finally be live sometime next week.
The site's navigation will jump to the bottom of the page on smaller width's and there is a "Skip to site navigation" link on the header.
