3D Animation for the Online Museum of Old Games

Hey guys!

Recently, Vlad shared his memories of nostalgia-inducing video games in his design for the Online Museum – and they took me straight back to my childhood. Now, though, it’s time to go to the next stage and bring them to life through animation!

Vlad’s work is all about arcade games and retro themes, so I thought it made sense to show the text in the form of pixels. To that end I used CC Block Load and Mosaic effects. If you switch between photos, you notice strong graininess, which is made via Add Grain Effect with the Kodak Vision 800T preset. The photographs are designed through a symmetrical change in the shape of the mask.

If you hover over one of the photos, you’ll notice different reactions from each of its constituent parts. More surprises are to come when you hover over the links – the cursor changes into an image of the game. The Online Museum aims to let you check out arcade machines in all their glory without leaving home, so it was crucial to work on the details as 3D models to make them look real.

But how could any game be complete without an Easter egg or two? Spoiler alert! First up, there’s the Street Fighter characters waiting for you at the website footer. And if you think that’s not enough, check out the original gameplay for the arcade game Suzuka – it’s available for 8 hours straight on the landing page.

All in all, I’m eager to hear what you think!
