Finally making some progress on figuring out how the filtering will work on the issue listing page. Taking a new approach of hiding it by default but making it readily available via a pull down tab.

This is very much a work in progress, but the full-size rough drafts are attached for context.

I feel like these are a bit weird having both tabs on top of each other, plus it interferes with the search box.

Matt - The alerts bar won't generally be there, and the issue listing page is the only other place where they could appear at the same time. I just made sure to include both to illustrate the pattern. (I've attached another full-page without the alerts bar so it's easier to see what it looks like 99% of the time.)

As far as interfering with the search bar, I think the benefits outweigh the potential drawbacks. The depth helps draw attention to it, and there's still plenty of clickable area for focusing on the search box. The padding on the search box will also make sure that the alerts tab doesn't hinder the readability of the text. Keep in mind, the alert bar generally isn't going to be there, and when it is there, there's a good reason for it. So, you'd check it, handle the issue, and then it would disappear. So I'm confident that it's the right level of intrusiveness.

I love this, other than the search field itself. I feel like that should be darker than the wood, or at least inherit its texture and also have moar rounded corners. As it is it feels kinda weird to me. I CANNOT WAIT for this to go live. Great stuff, Garrett.

This is an interesting approach, and the concepts are right on target, but something doesn't quite feel right. Firstly, does the alert bar expand down as well, and show the "alert" itself? I'm assuming it does... but if not, then I think clearly they can't look so similar.

Assuming they both slide down, I'm not sure that it's immediately obvious. I don't know if it's because of the half-circle as the "clickable" area, or if it's the icons themselves that hide the fact that it expands.

I think giving it less of a half-circle shape, and more of a half-square with, say, a 5-7px rounded corner might be closer to a tab and more welcoming for someone to click. Also, what if you had a subtle vertical bar that split the icon (left) and something like a down arrow (right) to indicate that it comes down?

And while I'm being picky, I think the distance on the shadows are a bit too big. I know you want to show depth since it's an overlay, but it almost feels like you're losing the crispness of the rest of the design.

Aside from that, though, the rest of the header is absolutely gorgeous. Really nice work!

Ryan - They both have the same behavior within the app. I agree with you that it's not immediately obvious, but having explored about a dozen options, I think it's a fair tradeoff.

I haven't played with the arrow concepts since making it rounded, so maybe there's something there. The problem with making them more chunky and tab-like is that it's not subtle at all.

I definitely think you're right about the shadows. I've been toying with colors and layout so much, I haven't really been paying attention to them. Maybe I can do something with those to reinforce the "pullability" of the tabs. Thanks!
