With respect to the icon Laurent Baumann did in 2009, and by Laurent suggestion, I took the challenge to try to improve it for the next version of Fontcase.

@Pedja for me its tough to call that... Emanuels red makes the felt cushion sort of cleaner while Laurents seems to be darker.
I'd like to see the capital 'A' given a little more room from the hinge above it though.
Anyway, it was a great icon... and it still is :)

The two thingys on the front that one uses to open the case. they should be on the inside as one slides em outwards to open the box.

@Emanuel: I believe Pedro is referring to the clasps that would hold the metal case shut when closed and how the clasps themselves don't align to the buttons on the exterior of the case. Your drawing of them is correct, however, as the way such a mechanism works is that moving the switches on the outside of the case moves the centered clasps and allows them to fit into the opening in the lid. Releasing the switches snaps the clasps back into place so that they hook on a ledge inside.
Regarding the cushion, yours looks more like padding where as Laurent's original version looked more like a pillow resting inside the case. I do think your iteration feels a bit flat compared to the original, but as others have said, the icon overall is spot on and is a great iterative improvement over Laurent's fantastic original.

1. The A need more room on top.
2. Opened lid's inner surface looks unfinished to me. Maybe some texture or more accurate reflection will help. Try lens blur for this type of DOF. I do not believe that "gaussian" view). Hope it helps.

The cuishon borders look less realistic in the new version. Also, a little bit more texture would be nice :)

I do think Laurent's reflection on the inside of the lid is more accurate. You don't seem to have reflected some of the space that would appear from the edge of the cushion or the bevel around the cushion.

It looks amazing, but for some reason I feel like the cushion is a bit weird. In the bottom part of the briefcase it looks like the cushion is taller than the briefcase, but on the top part, it looks like it's the other way around. That's how I see it, but maybe it's just me… :p

The case is an improvement to be sure. Laurent's original velvet interior is more lush, more realistic however. Keep at it, well done.

I really love the new clasps! One thing I notice is that you have removed a lot of the dithering noise, which is IMHO a rather important part of keeping things looking real and textured. If you look at the Front Row icon http://im.macovod.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/frontrow-icon.png you can see what I mean...
Very nice, though, and I love how much softer and shinier it is!
