This was modeled and rendered in Cinema 4D, with some additional texturing in Photoshop. The red color was an overlay layer in Photoshop, and I did the paint/anodize chips around the edge with a mask.
Quick Cinema 4d question...do you export from C4D to Photoshop in raster or is is something more workable like shape paths? Want to invest in C4D but trying to learn more about people's workflow.
I'm not aware of an equivalent to shape paths, but if I want to color/adjust something like the red part for example, I can render only that part in C4D, save as PSD and import the resulting alpha mask into PS. It's all rasterized at that point, but I tend to render in fairly hi-res and downscale later.
Now, C4D does let you export much of the lighting and surface properties as separate layers, so for example you can enhance specular highlights and mask/hide reflections by manipulating PS layers, which is pretty handy.
