Representation

I made this illustration for an article named Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors. It's about how books are like mirrors to children, and how important it is for them to be able to relate to its characters.

Apparently, there are many books written for American children but not many for those of different backgrounds and environments.

In the image I tried to depict how for some children it's easy to recognize themselves in a book, therefore they gather more self-confidence and see their own value in society. Whereas the girl in this image can find fewer books that are relatable to her and her background. I tried to depict the two in a non-defining way by simply setting them apart as blue and orange in this case, but they remain equal.

This design is made for a risograph print. It's a method designed mainly for high-volume photocopying and printing. It works with stencils, which are prepared for each separate color you use.
