I'm not sure about the brushed metal look, must try it at a smaller size first. Changed the gloss to something that's a bit more in line with what Apple does (although they use the diagonal shine on their own Video.app icon)

Let me know if you guys get bored with this icon ;)

Much better. I really don't like the brushed metal though.

Perhaps add shading to the border lines too?

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say I do like the brushed metal effect!

Tim, does the iPhone OS not add the gloss to the icons? Or is this just for showing final product?

@Dan gloss can be custom. In fact, you'd better have it custom if you're putting time into designing an icon.

Very nice Tim. Curious to see it sized-down to actual size.

Nice Tim, I really like it but I also have the idea that there is missing something to make it totally awesome :-)

I like it, however I think if you darker the blue colour you have overall the yellow star icon will really complement it better.

I think the brushed metal looks pretty good actually. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

It needs more contrast & the star would benefit from the 3D perspective also, looks kinda flat right now.

My experience has been for brushed metal textures to look right you need to use real photos for the texture and/or utilize environment photos as a reflection layer.

Also, the lighting in this looks a little too even. If the light is from above, then the inside top area needs to be much darker. If the star is what's illuminating the icon, then the inside would have a stronger contrast and the outside edge wouldn't be as bright. Hope I'm making sense here. :)

Last tip is to maybe utilize the "satin" layer effect, pick a light color, and set the blend mode to either "Color Dodge" or "Layer Dodge" at a low opacity. That can go a long way in adding bright highlights.

I agree with Phil's comment on the lighting looking too even. I think you've mastered the technique and rendering, but some strong overhead lighting could give it some more personality. Dramatic is the word I'm thinking.

This is going to sound really cheesy, but if the box was the home that the star lives in, then you need to put a good spotlight on it so the star want's to come out and play. LOL.

Shine makes sense now :) Needs to be missing or just like the original one (shape). because the iPhone has one primary light source.

I like the brushed metal look. It doesn't look 'fake' nor does it stand out too much either. The directions of the brushing seems to be correct as well. I'd say: keep it. :)

I like the brushed metal on the 'bezel' part but not on the inside walls. Perhaps a very subtle texture on those or even flat gradient to give the 'bezel' a cross-section type look.

This keeps getting better with each change though, Tim. Keep it up. :)

Brushed metal has potential, but it needs some more work as you mentioned. Other than that its looking great :D

I think Apple are able to use the diagonal shine on the video app because it's only on the section below the clapper board. If the glass was to sit inside the walls or the edge bezel was flush with the glass, ala iPhone, the diagonal gloss might work.

I'd also agree with other comments that the lighting is too even. The back of the box doesn't seem dark enough to me, darkening that and the walls as they get closer to the back would add depth. At the moment the walls seem to be the same colour all the way to the back, they should darken slightly towards the join with the back wall.

Why not trying to make the gloss like a glass cover fitting inside the box borders ?

I mean, if it's a box (open ?)... there is no surface reflecting the light and giving the gloss you drew on it. ;-)
