Planet icon series

So I finally decided to start learning Illustrator, and an absolute giant shoutout goes out to Andrew Rosek for this planet series tutorial. I'm still not sure I understand how the pathfinder tool works in intersect mode (that ring around Saturn took more tries than I care to admit), but I am getting there!
