Definitely a work-in-progress still, but I'm pretty happy with the notebook style. You can see the full page view at fiftydigital.com/assets/ft. I'd love to get some feedback on this ;-)

I Like it, love the textures and the header. My only thought was that the twitter bar really takes over (maybe that was the idea as you're quite active on twitter)

I think that's a good point about it taking over. I'll definitely have a look at toning it down somehow.
The reason for having the bold Twitter bar was (as you correctly guessed) to highlight what for me is a really important social network presence. A lot of people wouldn't see it anyway, as they'll either follow a link straight to a post page (which will be a much more minimal layout) or be reading via RSS.

Looks great, agree about the twitter bar.
The 'most read' section is perhaps too small, if you're trying to lower the contrast of it I think the colour alone is fine
