I had the pleasure of working with Justin Williams on the new icon and logo for Glassboard’s relaunch.
The previous icon served Glassboard well, but Justin wanted something that could carry the app for the future, demonstrate the effort he’s invested, and look great on iOS 7 and Android. I wanted something that wasn’t a chat bubble.
Here’s my actual email pitch for the final concept we went with (after lots of other alternatives and exploration): Glassboard icon pitch.
I hope you like it.
And yeah, it’s a tiny bit glossy. I don’t mind that at all.

Wait... are the letter extruding out, or recessed in? Optical mind tricks!
Those recessed letters are gorgeous. Beautiful work, Marc.
@Rene Ritchie Do not try and extrude the icon. That’s impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
@Nick Heer Thanks! I’ll be honest — it’s hard to know how a non-flat icon will be received on iOS these days. This one needed to work in other places, so iOS wasn’t the only concern.
Ok, I have to say that I´m addicted. To your posts here and on Designer News. Sorry, your blog etc posts aren´t enough. POST MORE!!!
Anyway, the idea with the quotation marks is awesome and I have to admit that I never would had come to this kind of idea! Great work.
The colours are amazing! Also thanks for sharing your pitch work. I love seeing the thought process.
@Rene Ritchie PS. Trying to extrude the icon just makes my brain say 'Stop trying! It's not logical' :P
@Sebastian Hager Thank you very much for the kind words. I’ll do my best to keep the pace up.
@Troy Rizzo @Rene Ritchie It was modelled in 3D, so should be closish to reality. Although, I think for the perspective to be that great, the icon would have to be physically quite big.
Cool! It has depth, but it doesn't feel like it would be too out of place on iOS7. Nicely done! Maybe you can help get the pendulum swinging back towards the occasional realism and not-awful gradients.
@James Ferrell Ha! I can try. I think it’ll swing back on its own. It’s interesting to consider what’s next. I doubt things will look exactly like iOS 6, but it’s pretty clear many new designs have gone as minimal as possible. There’s really only one direction from here, assuming design will continue to progress and assuming fashion will change (of course it will).
Yeah, agreed. It can't hurt to have some catalysts though.
Nice icon, but I see it as 96 ^_^
"GB" are my initials and I went with a similar treatment for my personal portfolio website icon, using a G and a B character that are identical, but rotated. I guess I wasn't as original as I thought!
I think icon looks great, specially like the 3d effect and very light gradient in background and it is tint of your logo color. Overall awesome job guys.
@Jono Thanks. And yep, that’s something we discussed. Quote marks are often called 66 and 99, so we knew some may see the icon that way. Given the context, where “Glassboard” is written underneath or within close proximity, we thought that shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
@Gareth Botha Great minds etc?
@chirag dave - uijunction Thank you!
