I agree, black background is a no-go for me. :(
Perhaps you could try to make the whole Remindness logo the icon, without any background? A bit zooming in, a small border, cropped - a bit like the tapbot icons. ;)

The Plants vs Zombies icon kinda works with the black background, but it would still be better with a proper button.
I tend to think non-button icons make everything look weird.

@Robbie: it isn't so much "hate" as it is "Apple says not to design icons with transparent backgrounds" in their HIG for iPhone/iPad.
