@Owen: Yeah. I say I need more practice as I know I can produce better drawings, but I got a bit OTT with the tablet today and couldn't interpret the light on the face that was missing from the photo, so it looks a bit flat to me. I'm just a perfectionist.
What amazes me is the 2 hours it took you to produce this. I could draw the contour in 2 hours, as I would spend a lot of time trying to get the proportions correct. I have friends who can draw like you with your speed, and it's definitely cultivated talent. Some work hard, but can never seem to break through and produce a drawing like you have with so little effort.
Actually I think this is terrible. Absolutely awful. The man has no talent. Call that illustration? Scribbles. Who let this chap on dribbble? The shading is all wrong. And where are the bags under the eyes and the blotchy skin that I know so well? And the silly hat?
I've had a tendency to resist tablet drawing (I quite like pen/pencil on paper) but you and the iPad are making me curious about it again.
I think part of it may be the need to be using a newer Wacom tablet as the one I've played with is eons old. That and I'm curious about what kind of work could be done on the iPad.
Anyway, wonderful stuff, thanks for sharing and inspiring.

First play with my new Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. Couple of hours drawing from a poorly lit photo. More practice needed methinks.

Oh man, awesome. I just got me a tablet myself. You've inspired me to try and draw photographs.

"More practice needed"? Are you kidding? By all means, keep at it, but this is very good indeed. No false modesty, please. Now have a cup of tea.

Trying to find a superlative that hasn't already been used... How about the Will-Ferrell-as-James-Lipton classic: scrumtrilescent.

It's an amazing drawing, don't be so hard on yourself man ;-)

"More practice needed" is just Simon's way of telling us all how insignificant our skills are in comparison to his. And he's right.

@Dan: As if I'd be that arrogant ;)

Now we know why you left.

Wow, first time? I can't wait to see some of the stuff that you approve of.

Wow cubed. I wish I could draw something besides letters and words. Like your face.

First time?
I give up. I'm off to work in a petrol station or whatever.

Nothing wrong with being a perfectionist, but this is very good.

I think my skills in comparison to other full-fledged designers just went from "kid with crayons" to "caveman with burnt stick"
That's great Simon, and given your comments, I can't wait to see what else you do!

Also, splendid work.

Not very stodgy! Where's the cup of tea? and the woman's clothes for comedic effect?

Wow! You never mentioned you had talent! You should do something with that, mate. :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
This is bloody marvellous.

He's right, I have to practice more to get anywhere near this. That and perhaps get some sort of talent infusion.
