First shot at doing a gif. Unfortunately I feel a little deprived of more "advanced" gif making tools, anyone have suggestions for a Mac user?

You might try using a screen capture utility to do a video capture of your screen. Then bring it into photoshop, crop, and save as a gif. I used Screen Capture Lite to make this gif shot I just posted:
Quicktime does video recording also, but doesn't capture Retina resolution, unfortunately. :-(
@Chanpory Rith I tried doing a screen capture but got nasty results trying to convert it to a gif... didn't realize you could bring it into PS (makes sense). Thanks! I'll have to try.
Yeah, it's not super-intuitive, but it does the job. Just make sure to do "Save for web..." so that it animates. I'm sure other folks will have better tools for this stuff.
@Chanpory Rith That actually worked quite well: http://dribbble.com/shots/1232361-Drop-In-Navigation-Animated/attachments/166223
@Sam Herbert After Effects is really nice for prototyping/Animations
