Military Radio

My goal for this model and render was to achieve realism while refining my modeling techniques.

I wanted to focus on achieving realism while modeling something interesting to look at. I really like the aesthetic of military radio equipment as they tend to have lots of small, yet specific, details throughout. I came across one specific radio that I liked online, and decided to model it after that. I found great imagery to model it after, reference shots from above, perfect profile shots, and almost every angle seemed to be covered.

I got to work creating the base model, then adding further geometry for more detail, and finally addressing the textures and UV maps. As I was winding up my model about a week later, I found the same reference images I had used on a 3D modeling site. It turns out that the reference images I was using were actual renders done by Vitalii Artiushenko.

Knowing that someone else had already put in the time to concept and create this model before I did was rough. I felt silly for not realizing earlier, but also incredible respect for Vitalii's work. I was trying to achieve realism with this project after all, not realizing that the image I was looking at was an already super realistic 3D model.

In the end I am still happy with the work I did as I achieved my goal and honed my skills as intended.
