Here's a silly and fun personal project I did early this morning. The Disneyland website has beautiful photos, a quick-access vacation-booking mechanism, and a wealth of information.
But when I visit the website, I feel like each of those elements are lost because they're all cramped together. All of the content on the front page that's necessary is within the top 200 pixels.
I wanted to address three things:
1. Separate the main navigation from the "Find Prices" bar to assist with clarity. (I recognize that I removed/changed labels in the "Find Prices" bar, but I'm taking some liberties. *wink*)
2. Add a rich splash of color that complements the photo and is impactful in a similar way to how the parks and resorts are so vivid and vibrant with color.
3. Give a hint at what fun awaits you before you go too far. The front page of Disneyland.com does not try to impress you with its multitude of attractions and stunning visuals. Show me a thrill ride, a dark ride, or a family ride! Give me a hint of the kind of fun I'll be having.
As noted above, I'm taking liberties, and just as I when posted Amazon or Google unsolicited redesigns... I do not pretend to completely understand the importance of placement in regards to business needs. I only know how to make things look good, and I think this helps it look prettier, more fanciful, and more fun.
I've attached three images, which are slightly taller so you can see a bit more of the attraction grid and different "hero" images with other vibrant colors surrounding them.

Bravo Louie. Love the colors along with the attraction grid. It would be interesting to see your complementing colors while keeping the widescreen edge-to-edge hero image as Disney has it now.
While I do like the edge-to-edge photography the site already has, I like the color background. It seems to give your mockups a bit of "whimsy" that Disney is so famous for. The four main links at the top could be dropdown menus that display the rest of the associated links.
Hide complexity for a simpler look.
Well executed and thought out Louie. And a great site to work on. What the heck, just call them up (Christie Volastro) and show them what you did. :)
The colors you've worked with fit so well.
Completely understand where you're coming from with respect to your feedback on the live site. I really like where you took this.
Two super minor things that irk me...
1. I feel the type in the marquee leaves something to be desired.
2. Perhaps the background on the Filter bar could be a faint cool gray to separate a bit more from the body of the page?
All in all - Excellent work.
I love the use of the castle in the logo on your version with the hint of Walt Disney from the stylized "W".
@Beau Pitcher Thanks! Disneyland used to have various castle symbology that went with the word mark, but they don't really use it anymore. I drew my own! :)
The "W" hint comes from their Disney Parks campaign they do with Annie Leibovitz. It's very clever and beautiful.

I do love where you're going but I would still love to an approach to what they've just cheaped out on and listed off on their site. After all, getting all that "important" stuff in there is just as much a challenge, if not more than, making it look pretty, and you'd be the right person to give it the style that it needs. It would definitely be interesting to see where you'd go with that!
All unsolicited redesigns should require this much explanation and thought. I like it.
