The implemented version would have to contain the photo within the circle, not that this wouldn't still look fantastic that way. I'm into it.
One thing bugs me though, the outer shadow of the circle containing the photo background causes depth problems. The background looks like it's floating above the container. If you made it an inner shadow, it'd put the photo's background on the proper plane of depth, which in turn makes the protruding effect of the photo's foreground much clearer.

@Isaac Paavola I agree, but this image circle is a concept where user can download a PSD to create this kind of avatar image :)
