I almost feel sorry for hastily mangling this together, but this is what I'm hoping for as an alternative to the sidebar, especially for those with a single account and no use for the account switcher. Also a little tweak to the popovers to relieve them from their flatness.
So where are the lists, trends and search when you hide the sidebar now? And how does it "break" anything if it just provides an optional, alternative way to navigate?
This should make for some fun meeting discussions :) It's not completely out of the question, but there's definitely other usability tweaks I'd like to implement first. Thanks for the mockup!
@Philipp: it breaks it since it will need a very different ux and ui for a lot of screens (eg.: saved searches). It's not like just having a quick presentation option, it will have a big impact on the whole experience. Not saying it would be a bad nav idea though, just thinking I can't really see that thing coming to twitterrific in its actual form ;)
I specifically didn't include search and lists because of the reason you mentioned, even though I'd love to be able to access those two without the sidebar as well ;)
+1 on breaking the search. That's high on my list to address, but we really wanted feature parity among all our versions and we'll begin tweaking now that it's happened.
@Philipp The segmented controls in lieue of the sidebar makes a lot of sense, especially considering the scope/business case of Twitterrific compared to the official Twitter app.
Still, one thing that bothers me is the lack of the usual pill button for collapsing the toolbar. This behaviour is encouraged by the copy of the site yet it is only accessible through keyboard shortcuts. Heh, not a big deal.
As a side note, I really like the "flatness" of the UI. Subtle and well-thought.

… or just the addition of a single control to the customizable toolbar.

I think they will do this. Since it's just some small addition to "Customize Toolbar..." as you said.

@Philipp: it's not that easy, it will break the current nav system + bring other issues (where are the lists, trends, search, … ?).

Yeah, I can see how it's not all that important and a bit redundant. But I'm happy you're at least considering it! :)

Why not just closing the sidebar to the icons only? That's quite neat, and doesn't steal much space. What do you think? :)

@Davide: It saves space, yes, but I don't think it looks attractive at all, and it leaves an inoperable search icon and lots of wasted space below.
