Which one says 'Logout' the best? Hmmm.

1 or 3, but not by much - they are all extremely ambiguous especially because of their similarity between iOS's "action" icon

@Mark: Any suggestions on achieving less ambiguity?

I'd say three too, but agree with Mark that they're all a little ambiguous. I've been toiling with this problem myself recently and settled on something very similar to three with a descriptive tooltip on hover which helps enforce what the button is doing. I'd been considering going for a guy running through the door as in a fire exit sign, but the imagery was a bit off, obviously!

I used this for login _and_logout in a recent project. http://d.pr/FALJ

@Kai: Really like the elegance of that approach. I did toy with that at one point, but with the same icon (and not being able to vary colour) you end up not knowing if you're logged in already or not.

Yeah true, in that case it was very obvious.

Rob, I think that the first option can communicate logging out. I too agree, and think that it can look a bit ambiguous, but I think that it will work. Especially if you are laying it out appropriately with other elements, then it will definitely say "log out".

@Rob, unfortunately not - I can't recall a single web app that uses a log out icon :( You could play with the ideas of a "key", but it just comes down to the fact that users aren't familiar with a universal log out icon yet

The triangle does not read like you intend, imho. It's instilled in my head as "play."

Tried incorporating a simple X into it somehow? That's the fastest read I've seen that says "get me out of here."
