Lettering if freaking hard.

I love lettering! Its the vectoring that kills me. This is looking fantastic though!
Here's my 2¢. This is going to sound like a sucky thing to say.
I like to sketch first—get what I love on paper. Then I pick a font that's in the same neighborhood and lay it out similarly to my sketch in Illustrator. Then edit the bejeezus out of it.
Benefits: Much quicker. Visible progress earlier. Built-in consistency of strokes, angles, baselines, scale, etc. by beginning with a font.
I'm not saying that's the ideal workflow for every situation. But it's a great one for a smaller budget or short timeline. I usually end up with something every bit as custom as if I'd built it from scratch.
Only difference: No one had to talk me down from the ledge during the process.
@Justin Hall That's what I usually do. But I wanted to do it freehand for this. Though I still was "inspired" by other stuff.
