A Study of Aesthetics History & Pixar Films - Comparison Spread

A Study of Aesthetics History & Pixar Films is a handcrafted book that demonstrates the visual and conceptual similarities between elements in Pixar movies and design artifacts from history.

It’s inspired by an exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt titled, Pixar: The Design of Story, as well as by a personal love of animated films.

I began the project by re-watching all of Pixar’s films, from 1995’s Toy Story up to Finding Dory in 2016 - the final Pixar film to come out at the time this book was made. Using the full extent of my visual art and graphic design education, I would pause and take screenshots whenever something in a scene seemed familiar. Afterward, I would conduct research to identify what that scene had reminded me of.

Eventually, I would assemble enough content to fill out a general timeline of design history. In total, the book features over 200 pages and 100 comparisons, divided into eras and styles and documented chronologically.
