It is crazy that the visual weight of the Warnock is almost the same as News Gothic which his so much bigger. I can't decide if I'd want it to be a touch (hair, tiny, little) smaller or not. But I really like the pairing!
These are both really nice typefaces, but I'm not feeling the pairing so much. What's it for? Which face did you start with?
Traditionally, headline gothics have been paired with no-frills serifed faces for text, like Times Romans or Cheltenhams. I think that's what bothers me here — Warnock is too full of sharp little details (specimen). Perhaps something sturdy like Adobe Text Pro would be a better match (specimen)?
This advice could also be totally wrong for your project-at-hand. It's kind of tough to judge without more context. Just thought I'd speak up. Critiquing font pairings is fun. :)
I am gonna have to agree with Tim on this one. Warnock is just to heavy and its chiseled edges feel a bit out of place with News Gothic. Just my $0.02.
Great feedback, guys.
The Warnock paragraph is an intro paragraph, but the following paras are a little lighter black and use a lighter weight.
Warnock is a bit chunky for this, but it's always been a favorite.
Finding a serif for body text on the web that isn't Georgia (which is the constant fallback, right?) is a tough job. The available tools for previewing specific fonts requires a lot of text setting and screenshot pasting…
At least some of the webfont services have tools that speed up the process.
But I think Warnock is interesting. Why stick to something traditional if you can create something new?
I think the issue is a size/weight relationship, not the typeface itself. For instance, you could go a bit bigger but use a Warnock Light. It wouldn't overpower the News Gothic.
I’ve become a huge fan of Fedra Serif Screen as an alternate to Georgia. It has a nice angularity to it, reminiscent of Warnock but not quite so, um, pointy.

I feel like the pairing might work if the Warnock was one weight lighter and in a dark grey rather than black.

I swear I'm not being biased here... ;)

@Tiff: Yes, a lighter weight for the body copy would actually make this better.
@Erik: Mmm, that italic is particularly nice and classic looking.
