Here is the Controls panel. Did a custom record button and other UI elements for it :)
That record button is 3 individual shape layers with layer styles applied to it. that's all :) I love photoshop!
1 layer is the "indent" ring, the next is the metal button, and the last is the red circle. no other layers used :)

I agree with Stephan too! Otherwise it looks pretty nice! Maybe you could try out the dark menubar like in Quicktime X.

Need to fix the gradient banding and also make things more contrasted. Darker Red, harsher metal.

That button doesn't really excite me much. I think it could do with being a bit shinier. As it is I'm not drawn to click it as everything looks a little dull (in colour.)

@Mac, the banding is only on this image... not in the actual panel in the app. This is a photoshop comp.. but i have since turned it into the real thing :)

I had actually already revised it, and yours look similar to my revision :)
I had made it shinier and brighter, as well I added a circular metallic texture :)
I'll post my version later tonight when I'm back near my computer.

I can't believe I am actually making good progress on this app! If i were a seasoned cocoa dev and not a complete n00b i prob would be done already :( still a ways to go.. since i dont know ANYTHING about cocoa & obj-c.

The overall design has a very non shinny look which I like. For contrast and texture difference it would be nice if the center red light was really shinny. Give it a glass effect. Your NOT recording design looks really good.
