Do you see negative/offensive messaging in using a whale with pregnant women as your primary client?
Here's a first draft logo for a midwifery practice.
Haven Midwifery operates near the bay. This logo uses the safe haven and oceanic themes with the mother whale protecting the baby whale. Note that whales have the longest pregnancies of any mammal and have water birth in common with the midwifery profession.

When you explain it in words as "whale" and "pregnant women", I could see how someone might object, but that didn't come to mind at all when looking at the image. I see a high-quality image that promotes loving care and motherhood, and a baby-friendly character style.
I guess my only concern would be that I read the image as mother and child, rather than midwife and child, but that might be fine and unavoidable. I assume the animal kingdom doesn't have any actual midwives, so the similarity is more about the water birth as you mentioned.
Love the way this is turning out, dude. The subtle smiles are a nice touch.
Should the bubbles have the offset blue fill too? Not sure, but maybe something to try.
The space between the "A" and "V" could use some kerning.
I like it but it bears a strong resemblance to the Squared Eye logo: http://behance.vo.llnwd.net/profiles/85966/projects/144068/859661225919848.jpg
Love it! I like the whales. And the "Haven" type is great. Always been a fan of those lower horizontal bars in the H, A and E.
