Black Dragon Magic

This illustration kind of killed my computer while making it! I'm not really sure what to do. This piece drove me nuts - I had massive lag problems and in the end didn't get to do all the details I wanted to.

My computer is good. I'm using Illustrator CS5. I've seen other people create vector illustrations much more detailed than this. What do I do? :(
