We do need another Twitter client that isn't the same as the rest, but gets right what the other got wrong. So far, no client has really mastered the art of navigation (Twitbit and Twitlogix, etc) AND beauty (Twitterrific, Birdfeed, etc). The beautiful ones overlook great usability, and the ones that use a proper tab bar overlook beauty (though Twitbit is close).
The main problem with Twitter clients is they all try to be innovative. This is an example of that. The best Twitter client is one that takes what Apple did right (almost all of iOS' default controls) and combines them to make an app that is simultaneously beautiful and easy to use.
Anyways, moving on to this specific piece of work. I don't quite like the idea of a vertical tab bar simply because it uses up unnecessary amounts of screen space and breaks a common metaphor. I rest my thumb on the side of the screen and move it around to scroll, not to change tabs. I tap to change tabs. Usually, you aren't actually changing tabs too much in an app anyways if you think about it (an app with too many tabs is an app that's doing it wrong). Additionally, how would the average user react? Not well. If you've ever been on Facebook through a time of change, you'll know the average user hates change.
Back to the "ideal Twitter client". In summary, it's one that an average user can just understand right off the bat, looks good (while embracing standard controls), and has all the necessary features.
